archiestandArchie Campbell was a country musician and a star of the Grand Ole Opry and the long running Nashville TV Show "Hee Haw." He was born in 1914 in Bulls Gap, TN. Next door to this homestead is the Bulls Gap city hall and the Archie Campbell Museum which houses artifacts from Campbell’s life, including a section on Hawkins County. campbelmuseumHighway US11 in the area was renamed Archie Campbell Highway. Every Labor Day Weekend, Bulls Gap has an Archie Cambell celebration.

Archie Campbell began his career as a Knoxville radio announcer in 1936, working alongside Opry great Roy Acuff on the daily show The Midday Merry-Go-Round. He later hosted County Playhouse, Knoxville’s first country music television program, and joined the cast of the Grand Ole Opry in 1958 as a comedian on the Prince Albert Show. In 1969, he was named “Comedian of the Year” by the Coutry Music Association for his work as a cast member and writer for the television show Hee Haw. Throughout his campbellhomecareer, Campbell was frequently referred to as “the Mayor of Bulls Gap.” The title, purely fictional, was often used to introduce him at personal appearances and the Grand Ole Opry during his 50 – plus years as a singer and comedian. During his lifetime he served in World War II, had two sons, and became an accomplished painter. He passed away on August 29, 1987 from complications due to a heart attack.

Archie Campbell Days – Every Labor Day Weekend - - The citizens of Bulls Gap celebrate their most famous son, the comedian from CBS's variety-comedy show Hee-Haw, with this street festival in downtown Olde Bulls Gap on Labor Day Weekend. Vendors, live music, and much more. Off of Highway 11E on South Main Street. All day, Saturday thru Monday, free event.
